Overview

 

Students will apply real world knowledge as they strategically evaluate job/business opportunities based on earning potential, home prices for sale and determine affordability. Most financial advisors suggest a house payment of 25% or less of monthly income. Students will select a dream job, determine 25% of their monthly income, search for a house in their budget, and write an offer letter.

 

Duration: 5-7 Days

 

This project is perfect for creative writing, substitutes, and extra credit.

 

Day 1:

  • Introduce project with Brochure and 1/2 page hand out Let’s Find You a House. (Print Brochure from separate file)
  • Brainstorm about jobs and homes

 

 

Day 2:

  • Research occupations.
  • Identify 3 occupations of interest and determine

annual and monthly income

  • Determine 25% of monthly income

(House payment budget)

 

Day 3

  • Use Bank rate slide tool to determine total cost of house
  • Begin house hunting!
  • Identify 3 homes of interest

 

Day 4

  • Select winning home
  • Study pictures and descriptions
  • List 20 admirable details about house

 

Day 5

  • Choose Letter to Seller template (Create in Canva.com: Free and user friendly_
  • Write a letter to seller draft

 

Day 6

  • Polish Letter

 

This is a very FUN and engaging, yet practical writing and research project for high school.
