Our boys exchange names every year for Christmas and then are blessed to buy gifts for their selected brother. This year, our youngest picked out an Ant Farm for his brother. Not only is this an excellent gift for the animal lover of our family, but it has turned into an amazing “cross-grade” science lesson. I find it crazy that I have been the mom of boys for over 22 years and this is the first ant farm, don’t you? The boys were beside themselves when the ants finally arrived. Note: ants are not included in the ant farm. We ordered them from AntsAlive. The crazy cold weather caused them to be behind in shipping, but the ants arrived safe and sound! It has been fascinating to watch these industrious little creature go to town! 6 Lessons from Kids Learn from Ant Farms Ants are Purpose Driven. “By purpose, I mean having a clear long term objective or goal which shapes everything you do. For example, one ant’s sole job description is to find food for the colony. This is his purpose, and all that he inputs this time and energy into, and so it compounds his chances of success.” – Diana Quartey Ants are Well-Organized. They are so well organized, that they carry out their entire task through the division of labor. Nothing is left undone in the Ant colony, because of the well-organized structure, which has already been put in place. Ants are Unselfish. If they find something eatable, they immediately spread the word to others. Ants are Efficient. They take the shortest path possible. Ants Communicate. They take the time to pass on all information. Ants are Know their Limits. They only carry what they can handle. The Coolest Ant Farms Available! When my boys received their first ant farm, I simply ordered it from Amazon. It’s that clear blue get filled farm above. And it worked just fine. And then we met Thomas and his son from Formica Ant Farms. We started ant keeping a few years back. There is something new to learn every day and it just never gets boring. Ants are such exciting creatures! One day we realized that all the ant farms you can buy are kind of boring and almost all look the same. So the ant farm can grow with the size of your colony! Thomas & Eric
