Each spring, the homeschooling community will begin talking about next year’s plan and curriculum. During the summer, most homeschoolers are sitting by the pool with their kids feeling a bit guilty because they pushed aside their plan to keep up with math through the summer. Come August, you will begin to see facebook fill up with people talking about receiving their curriculum as they panic that there is not enough summer left to plan out the school year. September is met with total panic on the homeschooler’s part as they realize that they need to get out of bed and “do School”. My kids especially despise September. But then comes October. Ah, October, Hot chocolate, autumn leaves and school simply humming along. Bliss- photo by Michael Podger Then comes the holidays. Mid-November to Jan 1 in our home. We try to do school Thanksgiving week, but end up decorating for Christmas instead. After Thanksgiving, we all count down the days until the Christmas Break. Then we sink blissfully into the season. January first is met with “Happy New Year! Clean up Holiday Decorations” and plan for school again. January through April is hard core school. There are no huge bumps in the road. May is Spring fever (Unless you’re a veteran like me. Spring Fever begins on Ground Hog day for me) And then things repeat all over again. What does all this mean? Curriculum shopping is usually done between Jan-April. I think this is because we can clearly see what is working and what needs to change. Curriculum tends to go on and off sale during this time. Summer is pretty quiet. That is why it is so hard to plan school rather than pool lounge. Back to school is a great time to stock up on school supplies.
