She lays awake at night tossing and turning. She tries to rest, but when she closes her eyes she sees the slumped over image of her son burned into her memory.

“I failed again.”

She is confused. She read all the latest and greatest articles on how to teach her child, but when she tries to follow the advice, her son closes down and she becomes frustrated, discouraged and depressed.

“I’m messing up my kid!”

Today was no different. A new lesson, neatly sharpened pencils, a good breakfast and the day began as usual. Son was happy; until the books came out… then the sparkle in his eyes dimmed and his shoulders slouched forward.

How to Make Learning Fun

EXPERIENCE. Before handing a child a pencil, give them an experience, take them on a journey, capture their imagination and ignite their curiosity. Field trips, vacations, movies and trips to the library whet their whistle and give you the opportunity to witness what catches their attention.
HANDS-ON. Find ways to touch, mold, eat, smell, and manipulate a subject BEFORE the pencil is handed to the child. It’s magic.
SIMPLIFY. Remember, kids do not need to practice a skill 14 times to “prove” they’ve learned it well. Doing fewer problems, writing fewer words is usually the shortest path to success.
